WHY DO GOOD THINGS HAPPEN TO BAD PEOPLE

Subtitle:Gods Promises to His children

A bible study by Adam Osborne, Jr.

19 August 2010

On 19 August 2010 I did a Google search for a term that we are all familiar with: Why do bad things happen to good people.Guess how many replies from Google I received? ANSWER:Google replied with 343,000 results. I received that in 0.31 seconds from the Google server.

Today, Id like to for us to discuss. WHY DO GOOD THINGS HAPPEN TO BAD PEOPLE?

Dont misunderstand my intentions; Im not talking about how or why the UNSAVED, wordly, flesh motivated, sinful, secular people of this world sometimes appear more successful, more lucky. Thats not where Im going in this study.

Someone read:

* Romans 3:23 (NIV) for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

* Romans 5:12 (NIV) Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned

* Gen 6:5 (NIV) The LORD saw how great man's wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.

* Psalms 14:3 (NIV) 3 All have turned aside, they have together become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one.

Ask Are there any other scriptures that you can think of that discuss the fact that all men are sinful?Ps 53:3 / Ps 130:3 / Prov 20:9 / Eccl 7:20 / Isaiah 53:6 / Isaiah 64:6 / Micah 7:2 / Gal 3:22 / 1 Jn 1:8 / 1 Jn 5:19

So, there shouldnt be any question, we are all bad, sinful people.

But, for all of us our sin separates us from God. Can someone give me a scripture that bridges the gap.. Can someone give me a scripture that tells us how and why a Holy God would still cause Good Things to Happen to Bad people.

Romans 8:1-4 (NIV) 1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus , 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death . 3 For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in sinful man, 4 in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us , who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit.

Someone give me a modern day paraphrase of what those verses just said.

* Romans 8:1 (NIV Study Bible) = Not guilty, let him go free. What would those words mean to someone who is on death row?Without Jesus, we all would be on death row.

* Romans 8:2 (NIV Study Bible) = Spirit of life is the Holy Spirit. He was present at the creation of the world (Genesis 1:2), and he is the power behind the rebirth of every Christian. He gives us the POWER we need to live the Christian life.

* Romans 8:3 (NIV Study Bible) = Jesus gave himself as a sacrifice (sin offering) for our sins.In Old Testament times, animal sacrifices were continually offered at the temple. The sacrifices showed the Israelites the seriousness of sin: blood had to be shed before sins could be pardoned.

Lev 17:11 (NIV) For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one's life.

* But the animal blood could not really remove sins:

Heb 10:4 (NIV) because it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

* The sacrifices could only point to Jesus sacrifice, which paid the penalty for all sins.

Since now we now know that believers stand UNCONDEMNED and RIGHTEOUS before a Holy God.now we can discuss Why Do Good Things to Happen to Bad people:

Mal 3:10 (NIV) Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.
